Reasons to Pray for Your Enemies

In a letter to his brother Warren in 1950, C.S. Lewis wrote: “It sounds impossible [to love and forgive our enemies]. I pray every night for the people I am most tempted to hate or despise (the present list is Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini . . . ) and in the effort to make this real I have had to do a good deal of thinking.”

That’s quite a list of “enemies” to resist the impulse to despise. Mine are a tad bit less despicable and difficult to love than those, but I pray for them by name most days. I hope for two answers to those prayers––he changes my heart and theirs too. That is, if they indeed need it. I know I do.
