Category: ON SUFFERING

“Weeping may endure for the night but joy comes in the morning.”

I risked making a category for the theme of “Suffering,” even though I know that many might avoid learning about it as much as they (we) try to avoid experiencing it. So, unless you’re in a season of suffering right now, or know someone who is, you’ll probably be apt to skip these posts altogether. On the other hand, if you’re reading this, it means you’ve at least clicked on the title, so you must have some sort of interest (whether a personal or compassionate one).

Before I had a “dark night of the soul” season myself, I had compassion for sufferers, but didn’t really know how help them. I pastored three churches for about 30 years, and as I look back over my file of messages on this theme, I realize that though I taught biblically, engagingly (if I must say so myself), and compassionately – I really had very little idea of what I was talking about. I think it was all pretty much biblical but not very personal. It’s different with me now.

Now when I hear or read someone’s thoughts on suffering I wonder if they’ve felt significant pain in their own lives or not. If they haven’t, of course they’re not disqualified from teaching others about it, it’s just that there’s a difference between knowledge and wisdom, the latter coming from experience.

I’m not claiming to know everything there is to know about physical, emotional, relational, or spiritual misery; but I have lerned a few things since I’ve wept through a night or two and have also seen the joy that comes in the morning.

Lessons of a Loser (part four)

Alcoholics Know How To Pray A while back I ran across the prayer often used by Alcoholics Anonymous groups. Anne Lamott calls it a "Greatest Hits prayer" and posits an alternative to the opening part:  "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can't change, the courage to change the things I can, …

Lessons of a Loser (part three)

I guess all loss is unplanned and unwelcomed. It happens nevertheless, and when it does it is a good idea to what lessons we might learn and blessings we might acquire. I mentioned my Buddy, Chemo who hurt me to help me, and then my Birthmark, the evidence of God’s love when I entered his …

Lessons of a Loser (part two)

When I lost almost everything important to me a few years ago, in my quest to survive, I found myself learning things I didn’t realize were out there to be learned. In part one I talked about the surprise of meeting a new friend – a Buddy – named “Chemo.” Here I’m going to tell …

Lessons of a Loser (part one)

I’m a huge loser. I’ve lost huge amounts of stuff, and I’m not talking about stuff like car keys or socks (always just one per pair) in the dryer. In a single two-month period I lost my marriage (of thirty-three years), my ministry (I was pastoring a nice little church in beautiful beach town in …

The Day I Got My “Whatever” Back (part five)

At his beck and call… This is my final post on "Whatever." In the first four offerings... I confessed my hiatus from praying for "whatever" God wants and then how I returned to it as a default. Then I referred to a bunch of Bible passages that show God's demand for "whatever" and his prerogative …
