Good People with Good Motives Pray Good Prayers

I watched a huge chunk of the “Rededication 250” event the other day. I was pleasantly surprised that some of the prayers were ones I could in good conscience say “Amen” to. Others not so much. But hey, prayers were said. That can’t be all bad.

I noticed the repeated refrain of “repentance” and “humility.” Lord, help us repent more of our lack of humility! Good “morals” and “values” got a lot of mentions about which we about which we could certainly stand a tad bit more in our country today. However, we do tend to be quite selective when it comes to prioritizing those. Thankfully, the Spirit deciphers our good from the bad motives behind the prayers we pray and is used to having to be selective in the ones he is willing to answer.

Here’s a passage that relates to some not-so-good motives:

“You rulers make decisions based on bribes; you priests teach God’s laws only for a price; you prophets won’t prophesy unless you are paid. Yet all of you claim to depend on the Lord. ‘No harm can come to us,” you say, “for the Lord is here among us.’” (Micah 3:11)

May God help us have good motives that lead to living good lives which result in praying good prayers that are true to his heart!
