Trump’s Popularity is Waning! But Why?

As you can see, President Trump’s popularity is waning among white evangelical believers. Yay! Good news!

But what shaves a little off of the goodness of the news to me is that his declining support for this group of which I am a part, is driven primarily by economic pressures and cost-of-living concerns (such as high gas prices and inflation). It’s not primarily for his draconian immigration policy that has jailed thousands of innocent mothers and children, his disastrous unilateral decision to go to war with Iran, his stupid idea that climate change is a hoax, his abusive misogyny. I could go on…

Yes, I’m glad that people are jumping off the Trump Train, but what causes me pause is that many are leaping because of how his policies affect their bottom-line, and not so much because of how people more vulnerable than them are managing. Have they given a thought about those who have been suffering all along in this economy, changing climate, militant ICE raids in their neighborhoods, not to mention the women and children in other countries whose suffering has increased exponentially since the cuts in USAID. Again, I could go on…

Sure, we all take into account our own needs (and many of our wants) when voting. But for those of you who actually believe in and try to obey God’s Word, whatever happened to this?

“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant…” (Philippians 2:4-7)

If you’ve recently jumped from the T Train, good for you. If you haven’t, what are you waiting for? And for all of us, let’s put our wants and some of our needs aside for the greater good of others whose needs are catastrophically graver than ours. To coin a phrase: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
